*An Accountant position is open for application. This one position could be filled at an Accountant I, II, III, or IV level based on the applicant's education, experience, and qualifications.

Scope of the Role

The Accountant (I, II, III, or IV) provides essential accounting functions for assigned areas in an accurate and timely manner. At the direction of their supervisor, this position will work with our third-party power plant operator liaison to ensure accurate financial and budget reporting for Golden Spread Electric Cooperative, Inc. (GSEC), including its subsidiaries Golden Spread Panhandle Wind Ranch (GSPWR) and GSEC Properties, Inc. This includes review of accounts payable, monthly accounting activities, spare parts inventory management, and monitoring and recording plant capital projects. This position will work with the power plants to provide management with an explanation of significant variances related to the plants’ budgets. This work has a direct financial impact on GSEC and an indirect financial impact on its Members.

This position will also assist with accounting journal entries and account reconciliations in the areas of fixed assets, fuel and purchased power, and other functions as needed.

Essential Job Functions

• Coordinate and communicate plant accounting information with the plant accounting team including third-party operator personnel and plant AP clerk.
• Build and maintain the relationship between GSEC and third-party plant operator.
• Collaborate with third-party plant operator liaison to prepare monthly journal entries to properly and timely record plant activity in GSEC general ledger.
• Review plant payables by ensuring appropriate approvals are obtained for expenditures, and that all bills are properly entered and ready to process in a timely manner.
• Collaborate with plant staff to resolve any past due issues and support the process of gathering necessary information.
• Facilitate communication between GSEC budget analyst and third-party plant operator and assist in preparation of plant budgets.
• Assist with monitoring budget to actual expense amounts, ensuring line items do not exceed their budget.
• Review and reconcile the spare parts inventory subledger to the general ledger and make necessary adjustments.
• Monitor plant capital projects and assist in fixed asset accounting, as directed.
• Assist in the preparation of the annual capital budget.
• Perform month/year end accounting duties as assigned, including journal entries and account reconciliations.
• Assist the Accounting Team with gathering property tax information and processing statements.
• Assist in preparation of annual audits, annual reports, and cost reports for regulatory entities. 
• Other duties as assigned.

Complexity of Problems (Accountant I)

• Entry level of discretion and problem solving are required.
• The greatest volume and most typical problems relate to the complexity of accounting for GSEC plant activity through a third-party operator.
• Under regular and routine guidance and supervision, the Accountant I will contribute to month-end closing and accounting for capital projects in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and GSEC policy.
• Must manage time appropriately to ensure timeliness of task completion, meeting report and project deadlines.

Complexity of Problems (Accountant II)

• Intermediate level of discretion and problem solving are required.
• The greatest volume and most typical problems relate to the complexity of accounting for GSEC plant activity through a third-party operator.
• Under moderate guidance and supervision, the Accountant II will contribute to month-end closing and accounting for capital projects in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and GSEC policy.
• Must manage time appropriately to ensure timeliness of task completion, meeting report and project deadlines.

Complexity of Problems (Accountant III)

• Intermediate level of discretion and problem solving are required.
• The greatest volume and most typical problems relate to the complexity of accounting for GSEC plant activity through a third-party operator.
• Under moderate to minimal guidance and supervision, the Accountant III will contribute to month-end closing and accounting for capital projects in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and GSEC policy.
• Must manage time appropriately to ensure timeliness of task completion, meeting report and project deadlines.
• Must demonstrate sufficient analytical skills to identify variances, unusual items or relationships, identify root cause of problems, and recommend solutions.

Complexity of Problems (Accountant IV)

• Advanced level of discretion and problem solving are required.
• The greatest volume and most typical problems relate to the complexity of accounting for GSEC plant activity through a third-party operator.
• Under minimal guidance and supervision, the Accountant IV will contribute to month-end closing and accounting for capital projects in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and GSEC policy.
• Must manage time appropriately to ensure timeliness of task completion, meeting report and project deadlines.
• Must demonstrate sufficient analytical skills to identify variances, unusual items or relationships, identify root cause of problems, and recommend solutions.

Education, Knowledge, and Experience Required (Accountant I)

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting required.
• 0-2 years of accounting experience required.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and accounting software.   
• Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) practices and processes.
• Knowledge of Excel, Power Query, and Power BI preferred.
• Ability to perform detailed work with a high degree of accuracy.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks in a timely manner to meet all deadlines.

Education, Knowledge, and Experience Required (Accountant II)

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting required.
• 2-4 years of accounting experience required.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and accounting software.   
• Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) practices and processes.
• Knowledge of Excel, Power Query, and Power BI preferred.
• Ability to perform detailed work with a high degree of accuracy.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks in a timely manner to meet all deadlines.

Education, Knowledge, and Experience Required (Accountant III)

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting required.
• Master’s degree in accounting preferred.
• Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or (Certified Management Accountant (CMA) preferred.
• 4-6 years of accounting experience required.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and accounting software.   
• Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) practices and processes.
• Advanced knowledge of Excel, Power Query, and Power BI preferred.
• Ability to perform detailed work with a high degree of accuracy independently.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks in a timely manner to meet all deadlines.

Education, Knowledge, and Experience Required (Accountant IV)

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting required.
• Master’s degree in accounting preferred.
• Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or (Certified Management Accountant (CMA) preferred.
• 7+ years of accounting experience required.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and accounting software.   
• Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) practices and processes.
• Advanced knowledge of Excel, Power Query, and Power BI preferred.
• Ability to perform detailed work with a high degree of accuracy independently.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks in a timely manner to meet all deadlines.

Work location and conditions – Office, Amarillo, TX. Occasional travel required.
